watch 0140 The Sandman Will Keep You Awake - The Loop A list of trivia related to Spider-Man No Way Home. References to Marvel Comics The movie's storyline adapts some elements of the infamous Spider-Man One More Day crossover, where Spider-Man, after unmasking himself during the Civil War crossover, seeks Doctor Strange's help to restore Aunt May's life after she is shot by an assassin hired by Kingpin only for Strange to be unable to do so and lead Parker to make a deal with Mephisto. In the film, Peter comes to Strange to request him to erase the memories of all people that he is Spider-Man which borrows elements from the One Moment In Time event, the sequel to One More Day which revealed how the events of Peter's deal with Mephisto went about which Strange was involved with which both these storyline events were written by Joe Quesada. Unlike the comics where she survived, in the film, Aunt May is killed by the Green Goblin. In the climax of the film Peter is forced to change the spell so everyone forgets who he is completely, while in the comics, only the knowledge of his secret identity was erased from almost everyone. Spider-Man switches to a black version of his costume during his first encounter with Electro and Sandman. While this references the outfit that Peter wore when he was first possessed by the Venom symbiote, he also wore his own version in the comics in the fallout of Civil War as a result of his secret identity being exposed, until after his secret identity was restored. That story is called Back in Black, which was published in 2007 to coincide with the newly-released Spider-Man 3, which also featured Peter Parker in a black costume. Therefore, Spider-Man wearing a black version of his costume in this film actually is a reference to Spider-Man 3 in a roundabout way. When Peter and Michelle are on the roof of Midtown School of Science and Technology, graffiti tags can be seen behind them reading 'Ditko' and 'Gkane', the former is a nod to artist and co-creator of Spider-Man and Doctor Strange Steve Ditko, while the latter refers to artist Gil Kane. The place where Aunt May works is the Community Center. This is a reference to her comic book counterpart who was first seen working at the center during the Brand New Day event, the follow-up to One More Day. After his defeat to Doctor Octopus and losing his powers, Electro wonders if there is a black Spider-Man out there in the Multiverse, which references Miles Morales/Spider-Man. Toby's Spiderman calling Andrew's Spiderman 'amazing' is a reference to "The Amazing Spiderman." The plot of Spider-Man meeting and teaming up with his Friendly Neighborhood and Amazing Spider-Man versions also has some similarities to previous Spider-Man crossovers, the 2012 comic book storyline Spider-Men which involved the mainstream version of Spider-Man crossing over to the Ultimate Marvel universe where he meets Miles Morales, and the loved ones of his "deceased" younger Ultimate Marvel counterpart and 2014 storyline Spider-Verse where different versions of Spider-Man team-up to deal with a common threat. When Ned Leeds learns from Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man how his best friend Harry Osborn became a villain and died while trying to kill him, Leeds promises he won't do the same if he were put in that position, which is a reference to his comic book counterpart who was the Hobgoblin. Just as in Spider-Man Homecoming and Spider-Man Far From Home there are several easter eggs hidden in license plates throughout the film. The MIT Assistant Vice Chancellor's license plate 63A5M-3 references the first appearance of Doctor Octopus in The Amazing Spider-Man 3, released in 1963. Another vehicle nearby has a license plate reading TCR 339, likely a reference to Timely Comics, the publishing division predecessor to Marvel Comics that was founded on January 3rd, 1939. A taxi parked just behind reads 1228, a nod to December 28th, the birthday of Spider-Man creator Stan Lee. Multiple figures prepare to invade Earth-199999 through multiversal rifts before Doctor Strange is able to close them. They include Sergei Kravinoff/Kraven the Hunter, Felicia Hardy/Black Cat, Mac Gargan/Scorpion, Otto Octavius/Spider-Man, Morbius the Living Vampire, and Aleksei Systevich/Rhino. References to the Marvel Cinematic Universe The film has connections to Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. Originally, Multiverse of Madness was to take place before Spider-Man No Way Home, but after that film was delayed due to the COVID-19 pandemic, aspects of the plot of No Way Home had to be rewritten for continuity purposes.[1] A trailer for Multiverse of Madness is included after the film's credits. The film features a cameo appearance by Matt Murdock, the protagonist of the Netflix series Daredevil, as Peter Parker's lawyer. It is the third time that a character from a Marvel Television project would appear in a Marvel Studios project, being preceded by Edwin Jarvis in Avengers Endgame and Wilson Fisk/Kingpin in Hawkeye, the latter of whom officially reprised the role the same week this film released, although he made an uncredited cameo appearance in the episode Echoes. Likewise, the film features multiple glimpses of advertisements for Rogers The Musical, an in-universe Broadway show seen in Hawkeye. No Way Home also ends with Parker swinging in his new suit above the large skating rink at the Rockefeller Center, a key location in that series' finale episode. Doctor Strange uses runes to enact magic spells, specifically the Runes of Kof-Kol, just as Scarlet Witch and Agatha Harkness did in the WandaVision episodes Previously On and The Series Finale.[2] References to the Spider-Man Films The film features the incarnations of Spider-Man, Green Goblin, Doctor Octopus, and Sandman that appeared in Sam Raimi's Spider-Man trilogy. Mary Jane Watson, Ben Parker, Dennis Carradine, Harry Osborn/New Goblin, Curt Connors, Penny Marko, and Venom from that universe are mentioned. The film features the incarnations of Spider-Man, Lizard, and Electro that appeared in Marc Webb's The Amazing Spider-Man films. Gwen Stacy, Ben Parker, and Aleksei Sytsevich/Rhino from that universe are mentioned. Amazing Spider-Man saves Michelle Jones from a long fall when Spider-Man was intercepted by the Green Goblin. This calls back to a notable scene from The Amazing Spider-Man 2, where Amazing Spider-Man was unable to save Gwen Stacy as she was falling to her demise. Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man experiences a bad backache before the final battle. This calls back to Spider-Man 2, where he attempts to jump from building-to-building to reawaken his powers, exclaiming "I'm back! I'm back!" but instead falls, hitting a parked car below and gets up groaning "My back! My back!". This is also a reference to Tobey Maguire's real-world back pain which led to rampant tabloid speculation and rumors that the role would be recast in the sequel with Jake Gyllenhaal. "You know, I'm something of a scientist myself." is a quote that was spoken by Norman Osborn in Spider-Man, which appears in Spider-Man No Way Home. Doctor Octopus' catchphrase "The power of the sun, in the palm of my hand...", which first appeared in Spider-Man 2, is said twice in Spider-Man No Way Home. When the Green Goblin arrives at the Statue of Liberty, he says "Can the Spider-Man come out to play?". He says the same line in Spider-Man, when Peter Parker attempts to leave a message for Mary Jane Watson and learns of the Goblin kidnapping her. When the Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man reunites with Otto Octavius the latter questions how the visibly older Peter Parker is doing and he responds "Trying to do better." the same line is spoken when the pair first meet in Spider-Man 2. The Spider-Sense sound cue from Sam Raimi's trilogy is heard when the Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man detects the Green Goblin flying in to attack the group in the final battle. Before Spider-Man can kill Green Goblin by stabbing him with the blades of his glider, Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man jumps in to stop him from doing it. The scene of the two struggling resembles the finale of Spider-Man where Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man stuggles to hold back a spear that Green Goblin is trying to stab him with. After Peter finally gives, Green Goblin takes advantage of the moment to stab Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man in the back, in a scene closely resembling Harry Osborn's sacrifice at the end of Spider-Man 3. The sketch with the Amazing Spider-Man in the credits features a Spider-Man Suit that resembles the one from The Amazing Spider-Man. References to Sony's Spider-Man Universe Eddie Brock / Venom from Sony's Spider-Man Universe appears in the film's post-credits scene where he's talking to a bartender about important individuals and events in the MCU Earth. After he's sent back to his home dimension, a speck of the Venom symbiote is left behind. In the scene, upon hearing the name "Hulk", Venom remarks to Eddie "And you thought 'Lethal Protector' was a shit name!", referencing the events of Venom Let There Be Carnage, in which Venom suggests he and Eddie become a vigilante by that name. "Venom Lethal Protector" is also the name of a 1993 comic book series about Venom. Unorganized Trivia There are several lines from the trailers that were re-worked or entirely cut in the finished film. Dr. Strange's first discussion with Peter about using his first name is different. Additionally, in the trailer Wong tells Dr. Strange not cast the spell, and Strange promises he won't. This is entirely cut from the final film. On December 8, 2021, Tom Holland told Fandango that he'd love to face off against Michael Morbius at some point down the line.[3] Holland also went onto say that he hopes to act alongside Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield some day.[4] On December 9, 2021, Holland mentioned how Watts had a fully fleshed-out idea for a Kraven the Hunter story, should the sequel to Spider-Man Far From Home need it. He goes onto say that, "For a long time, there was going to be a Kraven movie that was going to be the third movie because things weren’t working out and all sorts of different stuff. Jon pitched me this Kraven movie, which actually was really cool. I don’t want to talk about it in case that movie ends up happening down the line, but it was fun."[5] Also on this day, it was reported that with diplomatic tensions between Beijing and Washington at a nadir, Hollywood’s China business lines are hitting fresh lows. film imports are now at their lowest levels in a generation and various major studio features, including popular superhero titles Spider-Man No Way Home and Venom Let There Be Carnage from Sony-Marvel, still have no release dates. Their chances of getting the green light are becoming slimmer by the day as the year winds down, analysts say. However, many experts believe that the South Korean market could help fill that void left by China.[6] On December 10, 2021, Holland told Fandom that he thinks that there are some interesting villains and overall characters he'd loved Spider-Man to come across; such as Kingpin and Madame Web. In addition, he went onto say that “I also would like to maybe see what happens if my Spider-Man becomes a villain,” adds Holland. “I think there are some interesting things where you could make a film about an anti-hero, or things like that”...[7] Also on this day, Holland mentioned that “The initial idea of the multiverse was kind of a joke, really,” Holland tells The Hollywood Reporter. “I mean, it was one of those things where everyone was going, Wow, wouldn’t that be fun?’ And I think Kevin Feige was like, Yeah, that would be really fun. Why don’t we do that?’[8] Moreover, Holland confirmed that he, along with Andrew Garfield and Tobey Maguire are reportedly in a group chat, according to Holland, who started the chat after getting both actor’s numbers.[9] Marvel and Sony also went onto deliver a new TV spot for Spider-Man No Way Home that featured Willem Dafoe's Green Goblin and Jamie Foxx's Electro. The trailer uses scenes featuring the Green Goblin that have come in other trailers, although this one included Dafoe's villain uttering a new line that said "We have a new world to conquer."[10] Digital editing was done with Alfred Molina to make him look younger so he would be portrayed at the same age he was in Spider-Man 2. This film marks Tobey Maguire's first on screen film role in seven years since Pawn Sacrifice and his first film overall in four years since The Boss Baby, the latter being a voice only role. This is the first MCU film where Spider-Man is given a sound cue for his own Spider-Sense. This is the third highest grossing MCU film at the global box office, only behind Avengers Infinity War and Avengers Endgame. MORE Spider-Man No Way Home premieres on December 17th, assuming nothing unexpected forces Sony and Marvel to delay the film again. And Sony already has a challenging task at hand. The studio will soon have to start the official marketing for the movie and release the first trailer. From the looks of it, Sony will try to protect the worst-kept Spider-Man 3 secret to the very end, a task that’s more difficult than it was a few years ago when Far From Home debuted. Spider-Man 2 concluded the Infinity War saga, launching a few months after Avengers Endgame. But marketing for Far From Home started before Endgame premiered, further fueling speculation that the dead Avengers would return to life. At the time Sony released the first Far From Home trailer, months before Endgame, Tom Holland’s Peter Parker was still very, very dead. But we knew that Far From Home took place after Endgame in the MCU’s chronology, thanks to older comments from Sony execs. That meant that people who were snapped away by Thanos in Infinity War were obviously going to be brought back to life in Endgame. No Way Home will be an even more critical Spider-Man film than the previous episodes, setting the stage for a massive storyline that will span across various MCU movies and TV series. That’s what all the leaks say, and we have plenty of evidence to support them. But Sony might try to protect the worst-kept Spider-Man No Way Home secret until the very end. Mind you, plenty of Spider-Man 3 spoilers follow below. Today's Top Deal Luxurious bed sheets with 100,000 5-star Amazon reviews start at just $22 in this amazing sale! It’s also on par with what other actors hired to play MCU superheroes have done in the past, so we can’t blame him. But we saw evidence that indicates Garfield is in the movie. So is Tobey Maguire, who will also play his Spider-Man in the film. We’ve known for months that villains from Sony’s previous Spider-Man films will be back for No Way Home. Jamie Foxx famously confirmed that he’d play Electro. We then learned Alfred Molina will return as Doc Ock, and the actor confirmed it all in an interview a few weeks ago, joking that his involvement in the movie is an open secret. Sony is doing everything in their power to get these actors to deny their involvement, they likely wont be shown in marketing, all to try keep the element of surprise. In other words, Garfield is a bad actor here and Josh knows it. — Skyler Shuler SkylerShuler May 4, 2021 Garfield’s denial prompted Skyler Shuler to say on Twitter that “Sony is doing everything in their power to get these actors to deny their involvement, they likely won’t be shown in marketing, all to try [to] keep the element of surprise.” Shuler is from TheDisInsider, but it’s unclear whether he’s just speculating or he has access to inside information that confirms Garfield and Maguire are joining Holland in this Spider-Man 3 multiverse story. Tom Holland denied having met Garfield and Maguire as well, so Garfield isn’t the first Spider-man actor to field this line of questions. It’s evident at this point that Sony is nowhere near ready to start promoting No Way Home. The film only got name drops in Disney’s mid-December Investor Day event, and in Marvel’s promo video that was released a few days ago. Marvel used the clip to release the first Eternals footage ever shown, but it didn’t include any imagery or scenes from No Way Home. This seems to indicate that Sony is indeed trying to protect this massive Spider-Man 3 secret that’s not so secret anymore. Spider-Man No Way Home will be a multiverse film that will advance the interests of both Sony and Marvel. Kevin Feige and Co. have already laid the multiverse’s foundations with Doctor Strange, the Ant-Man movies, and Endgame. MCU Phase 4 will dive even deeper into the multiverse, and that much is clear from the Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness movie title. Doctor Strange Benedict Cumberbatch is also going to appear in Spider-Man 3. On the other hand, Sony has an impressive multiverse success on its hands already with Spider-Man Into the Spider-Verse. Spider-Man 3 will give it a chance to offer fans a live-action version of that. It’s not going to be a Mike Morales story, but No Way Home will help Sony tie the previous Spider-Man films to the MCU and enrich its own Spider-Man-based cinematic universe, the SPUMC. With all that in mind, it’s not unexpected to see Sony try to protect this massive No Way Home plot surprise. The whole thing benefits Marvel as well, which is notorious for doing everything possible to keep its secrets. But the surprise is already ruined. Just like we knew back in 2018 that the dead Avengers would be resurrected in Endgame, including Peter Parker, we know now that No Way Home will feature three different Spider-Man versions battling multiverse foes. This doesn’t make the next Spider-Man sequel any less interesting. After all, Endgame was incredibly entertaining even though we knew that most heroes would be resurrected.
